Lower Zambezi

The Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4,092 square kms, but most of the game is concentrated along the valley floor. There is an escarpment along the northern end which acts as a physical barrier to most of the park’s animal species. Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the rivers edge. ‘Island hopping’ buffalo and waterbuck are common. The park also hosts good populations of lion and leopard and listen too for the ubiquitous cry of the fish eagle. The diversity of animals is not as wide as the other big parks, but the opportunities to get close to game wandering in and out of the Zambezi channels are spectacular. The Park lies opposite the famous Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe, so the whole area on both sides of the river is a massive wildlife sanctuary.

Suggested Accommodation

Chiawa Camp
Resting peacefully on the banks of the Zambezi River, under a grove of evergreen Mahogany trees, Chiawa Camp holds prime position in the heart of Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park. Constructed mainly of natural materials Chiawa Camp blends in effortlessly with its idyllic surroundings and it is here where guests receive the very best Africa has to offer. A stunning thatched lounge/bar area with upstairs viewing deck provides one of the best views of the Zambezi. There are five Classic Safari Tents, one Honeymoon Tent and three Superior Tents at Chiawa Camp, accommodating a maximum of 16 guests on an individual basis or a maximum of 18 guests if the camp is booked out in its entirety for a group. The tents all have excellent views and are accessed by paths running behind them to maximise privacy. The guides at Chiawa Camp are experienced and qualified to help you get the most from your visit to the Lower Zambezi National Park, whether a water-based activity or on land.

Sausage Tree Safari Camp
Sausage Tree camp is located on the banks of the Zambezi River, at the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park. This exclusive safari camp specialises in affording guests the very best game viewing, with traditional safari style. Only the highest international standards in luxury and service are offered and are combined with this truly classic African wildlife experience. Sausage Tree Camp offers a large range of game-viewing activities including: game-drives (both day and night), walking safaris, canoeing, boating and fishing for the world-renowned "Tiger fish". With personalised guiding, guests decide exactly what activity they would like to take and when.

Old Mondoro Bush Camp
Old Mondoro is set in a grove of Acacia trees on the banks of the Zambezi River in the Lower Zambezi National Park some 10km downstream from Jeki Airstrip, near the Chakwenga River confluence. Here, the Park is characterised by vast flood plains and open woodland making for ideal walking and game viewing opportunities. This is very different from the rest of the Park, which is on higher ground characterised by thicker bush and large inland lagoons. Whilst Chiawa Camp and Sausage Tree Camp are more luxurious and sophisticated, guests will enjoy the very different and “back to the bush” atmosphere of Old Mondoro. Appropriately constructed of canvas and natural materials, the camp has an open and more adventurous feel yet provides a comfortable retreat after a day filled with excitement in the bush, where emphasis is placed on non-motorised safari activities.

Chongwe River Camp
Chongwe River Camp is a family owned and run business dedicated not only to providing your dream safari experience but also hospitality that can only be found in a home. The camp itself looks onto the confluence of the two rivers and the mountains of the escarpment to the north. The Lower Zambezi has become one of southern Africa's premier destinations for peaceful game viewing and unparalleled tiger fish angling. The chalets are large, well appointed Mulati tents under thatch, with a luxury open air bathroom en suite. Situated under a canopy of Albida thorns and surrounded by cool lawns, they command fabulous views over the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi Rivers. Each tent sleeps two people, in twin or double beds. Both day and night drives are available, and guests can plan their activities around their preferences. Walking adds an extra dimension to the game viewing, and also gives the chance to appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the bush. Chongwe House is a private bush home that offers an exclusive family safari experience.
