Africa & BeyondDon’t miss…

Surrounding the rugged Koranneberg Mountains in the Northern Cape, Tswalu Kalahari Reserve covers 1000km2 (100,000 hectares) of land on the edge of the mysterious desert wilderness that is the Kalahari. Tswalu is the historical home of the San, whose storytelling and dream imagery can be seen at the many archaeological sites found in this unique private game reserve. Tswalu also offers game drives in open-sided, canopied safari vehicles. All game drives are led by experienced rangers who provide a fascinating insight into indigenous and fascinating wildlife of the region.

See the amazing display of flowers in Namakwa where, between July and September, every colour of the rainbow carpets the earth. A biodiversity hotspot, the area contains more than 6,000 plant species, 250 species of birds, 78 species of mammals, 132 species of reptiles and amphibians, and an unknown number of insects, making it the world's most diverse, arid environment. More than 40% of these species are found nowhere else on Earth.

The Khoisan Rock Art found throughout the Karoo is extremely worth a visit. There are many farms where you can see the engravings in completely natural surroundings – far more rewarding than peering at them as exhibits behind glass.

The Karoo Battlefields is where the bitter battles of the Anglo-Boer War (1899 – 1902) took place. The best marked and most accessible sights form part of the N12 Battlefields Route that links the Karoo to the Diamond Fields.
