Known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills”, Rwanda is a small, landlocked republic in Equatorial Africa, and lies on the eastern rim of the Albertine Rift and the watershed between Africa’s two largest river systems: the Nile and the Congo. Rwanda is a mountainous country with a moist, temperate year-round climate.
Rwanda is an increasingly popular destination due largely to its Mountain Gorilla population. These magnificent creatures dwell in the protected and verdant forests such as those found in Parc National des Volcans. The park currently has 7 gorilla groups and 56 permits available per day. The number of permits can change without notice if the gorillas go across the border.
It’s not just the gorillas that people travel to Rwanda for. Birdlife is prolific with over 650 species recorded including the Shoebill and the rare Papyrus Gonolek. Other primates are also to be found here including Angola Colobus, L’Hoest’s Monkey and the now fully habituated Golden Monkeys.
Uganda is where the East African savannah meets the West African jungle. This incredibly lush country has open plains and rainforest, as well as channels teeming with hippo and majestic mountains shrouded in mist. This country has a range of forest primates as impressive as its selection of plains antelope. And this biodiversity is further strengthened by Uganda’s status as by far the smallest of the four African countries whose bird checklist tops the 1,000 mark.
