The South

The red and yellow sand mountains of the Namib Desert stretch all the way to the horizon and beyond. At dazzling depths the gorges of the Fish River Canyon cut into vast plains. Travelling through these dazzling landscapes you will truly look about in wonder. Only occasionally will you spot a farm far off the gravel road; villages and towns are even rarer. You will see surface water only in the shape of the Orange River (Gariep), Namibia’s southern border, as rain is scarce and falls in small quantities. It is this very austerity which makes the south so fascinating. Unique plants like the quiver tree, halfmens or resurrection plant have adapted to this habitat. This is the home of Springbok, Oryx and Ostrich.

Suggested Accommodation

Canyon Lodge
Canyon (Canon) Lodge is situated just 20km from the main viewpoint of the Fish River Canyon, and is situated on the 520 square km, privately owned Gondwana Canyon Park. Canyon Lodge is built from natural materials, including local rock and thatch roofs. The lodge offers 26 thatched, wooden bungalows all equipped with comfortable beds and en-suite bathrooms. The design of the bungalows was conceived with the idea to make you feel at one with nature whilst enjoying a comfortable stay.  The old farm house serves as the dining room. This tranquil lodge serves as an excellent base from which to explore the wonders of the Fish River Canyon.

Sinclair Guest Farm
Situated on the edge of the Namib Desert between Duwiseb Castle and Helmeringhausen, Sinclair Guest Farm is an ideal stop on a journey to Sesriem Canyon, Sossusvlei dunes and Lüderitz. Accommodation is in 5 double rooms each with private facilities. The fascinating scenery of this unique area provides ample opportunity for breathtaking photography or for painters. The emphasis here is very much about service with sumptuous meals served from breakfast through to dinner.

Getting there

Flying is the quickest and often the most economical way to travel around the country. Air Namibia (SW) links the major towns in the territory. Planes can also be chartered. Driving is also an option in Namibia as the roads are generally well maintained. We must stress that distances are truly vast in Namibia and road journeys can be very long!
