Quirimbas Archipelago

The extensive Quirimbas Archipelago consists of 27 offshore islands strung along the coast parallel to Pemba. The islands are composed of fossil coral rock and have lush vegetation and mangrove swamps. They support a wide variety of wading birds, turtles and terns. With only a handful of island lodges and resorts in the Quirimbas, this area remains one of the last undeveloped jewels in Africa. The establishment of the 7,500 km2 Quirimbas National Park in Mozambiques northern-most Cabo Delgado Province, close to the border with Tanzania, represents a globally significant conservation achievement.

This new park is a conservation triumph boasting an exciting mosaic of wildlife, and helping protect one of the richest areas of coral reef in the world protecting a rich array of coastal forests and mangroves, coral reefs and sea grass beds, as well as charismatic species such as dugongs, marine turtles, whales, dolphins and sharks, plus elephant, leopard, buffalo, lion and African hunting dog, the park also includes the St Lazarus Bank - a world-class diving spot, 42 nautical miles off the coast.

Suggested Accommodation

Quirimbas Ibo Island Lodge*****
Ibo Island Lodge is located on a prime waterfront site, where romantic dhows sail out to sea on each high tide. The lodge encompasses three magnificent mansions: Villa Paradiso, Villa Niassa and Villa Bela Vista. Accommodation is split between Paradiso and Niassa only - Bela Vista is the public area of the lodge and houses the Lodge's restaurant, shop and the main pool in the main garden.  All guest rooms are individually designed and unique, with many opening onto private verandas, decked with hand-crafted furniture and soft cushions covered in vibrant local fabrics.

Vamizi Island Lodge*****
Vamizi Island lodge, is a spectacular 24-bed lodge built on the northern side of the island and looks towards Rongui from the end of a long powder-sand beach. The lodge comprises ten separate beach houses, each with its own large living room, spectacular bathroom and breezy veranda. The houses are all secluded from each other and look out to sea from the shade of the forest that forms the centre of the island. Vamizi Island Lodge has been designed to complement the environment and to cause as little damage to it as possible. The construction uses almost entirely local materials - timber, thatch and stone all come from the mainland or the islands themselves - thus providing help to the local economy. Marine activities here include world-class blue water fishing and fly fishing, as well as scuba diving and snorkelling in some of the most pristine coral reefs of the Indian Ocean.

Quilalea Island*****
Quilálea island is uninhabited apart from the nine spacious villas and, in keeping with the lodge's firm environmental policies, each one has been built using entirely indigenous materials and locally handcrafted indigenous teak and mahogany. The exquisite creole Muani style timber furniture, fresh pastel linens and whitewashed walls give the interiors a cool, chic feel, whilst the large windows and private veranda afford panoramic views across the Indian Ocean . Above the main beach area, the open-sided bar, lounge and dining area are perfectly positioned to enjoy the skies at sunrise and sunset. Truly delicious lunches and dinners are created from the freshest local, fair-trade produce. The aromatic spices and flavours of Goa and Portugal dominate the cuisine in testament to the country's past. Days on the island are a whimsical mix: day-dreaming on hammocks, soaking up the sun by the sparkling pool, sport fishing along the deep drop offs (catch & release), diving with sharks and turtles on the home reef, kayaking the picturesque mangrove channels or sailing to historic Ibo island to explore the crumbling Portuguese fort.
