Chobe

To the northeast of the Okavango Delta are the Chobe National Park and the private Kwando, Selinda and Linyanti Game Reserves. These areas are renowned for their predators and large concentrations of game, particularly elephant. There are many varied habitats within the Chobe and Linyanti: marshes, waterways, riverine forests, dry woodlands and the world famous Savuti Channel. The Savuti Channel is a "waterway" that connects the Linyanti River from Zibadianja Lagoon, with the interior of the Chobe National Park at the Savuti Marsh. The Savuti has only ever flowed intermittently and dried up for the last time in 1980. Today the Savuti Channel is an open grassland and home to a variety of different animals.

The Linyanti, Selinda and Kwando are vast private reserves on Chobe's Western boundary. This area is very different from the Okavango and should be included in every Botswana itinerary so that travellers have a more varied and balanced experience of the country.

Suggested Accommodation

Duma Tau
Meaning 'roar of the lion', Duma Tau is a ten-roomed luxury tented camp, in the private 125 000-hectare Linyanti Wildlife Reserve which borders the western boundary of Chobe National Park. The camp is built on raised boardwalks under a shady grove of mangosteen trees, overlooking a large hippo-filled lagoon on the Linyanti waterways. The source of the Savuti Channel is close to the camp and game drives along the Savuti are one of the highlights of the camp.  The rooms are spacious, raised off the ground and under thatch with canvas walls - allowing guests to enjoy the night sounds of Africa from the comfort of their rooms. The bathroom facilities are en-suite, with hot and cold running water. Each room has an additional outside shower. Activities are diverse and allow guests time on the water, on land and occasionally on foot. Day and night game drives are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles along the Savuti Channel and the banks of the Linyanti River.

Savuti Camp
Savuti Camp is situated in the Linyanti Reserve along the Savuti Channel. The camp is built about 17 kms 'downstream' from the source of the Savuti. The camp provides accommodation in 7 walk-in tented rooms with en-suite facilities. Each room is raised off the ground on wooden decks. The camp has a thatched dining area, bar and plunge pool, all on raised wooden decks. There is a waterhole close to camp and this attracts large numbers of animals that guests can view from the camp. Activities include day and night game drives in open 4x4 Land Rovers, hides (including a woodpile hide located at the waterhole in front of the camp), and walks with an armed guide. Wildlife in the area includes all of Botswana's big animals and is one of the best areas in the country to see predators.

Zibadianja Camp
Zibadianja Camp is moving to a great new site that looks towards the Zibadianja Lagoon. The new site is about 2km south-east from the old camp and is situated in the far eastern sector of the Selinda Reserve under ancient Jackalberry and Red Ivory forests. The view, the shady trees and the high wildlife concentrations characterise the camp as do the elevated views across the flood plain that form an extension of Zibadianja Lagoon’s southern shores. This Premier quality camp has four large and luxuriously appointed double or twin “marquis style” tents that accommodate a maximum of 6 guests. Each ‘campaign’ furnished tent is expansive (10x18m) and is positioned to emphasise the spectacular view. Each tent comprises a spacious bedroom, an en suitebathroom with copper bath & shower, and an outdoor shower as well as a separate and comfortable lounge.

Kwando Lagoon Camp
Lagoon Camp lies on the shady banks of the Kwando River among tall and ancient African Ebony and Marula trees, under the watchful gaze of the resident hippos. Lagoon Camp accommodates only 16 guests in 8 twin bedded luxury safari-style tents. Each tent looks out over the water and has private en-suite facilities, including 24 hour hot and cold running water, open-air showers, flush toilets and modern amenities. Morning and night game drives are conducted by specialist guides and trackers in open safari vehicles. This area is home to huge herds of elephants and buffalo. There are few places in Africa where such concentrated numbers of these animals exist, especially in the dry season.

Muchenje Safari Lodge****
Muchenje accommodates just 20 guests in intimate exclusivity. The 10 twin-bedded thatched chalets, all with en-suite facilities, are sited on an escarpment edge all with their own balcony and unique view.  Each chalet is exquisitely furnished and great care has been taken to create a true African 'ambience'. Game drives, night drives, walking safaris, and river cruising are highlights, with fishing and interior dives to the most remote areas of Chobe available on request.
