Moremi Game Reserve

The Moremi Game Reserve is situated to the northeast of Maun, Botswana, and covers some 20 percent of the Okavango Delta. The reserve lies within a wildlife management area that is strictly controlled and the animals in the reserve are therefore allowed free seasonal movement. Moremi Game Reserve enjoys a wide diversity of habitats and is well known for the height of the trees in the mopane tongue, which covers the central area. Wildlife in the Moremi Game Reserve include elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hyena, jackal as well as a wide range of antelope including the endemic Red lechwe.

The bird population includes many water birds and, during the wet season, bird watchers can enjoy exceptional bird watching opportunities. Most of the dry land area of the Moremi Game Reserve is covered in Mopane tree (Colophospermum mopane) canopies. Riverine woodland, floodplain grasses, sandveld and some flower species are also found.

Suggested Accommodation

Little Vumbura
Little Vumbura is a beautiful 6-roomed tented camp bordering the Moremi Game Reserve in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta. The 6 tented rooms are large and comfortably appointed and each has an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water, a shower and flush toilet. The camp also has a plunge pool. Both water and land activities are available - mokoros (dug-out canoes) traverse the flood plains under the guidance of experienced polers and open 4x4 Land Rovers allow guests to get close to animals in the savannah areas. Guests usually have the opportunity to see lion, leopard, elephant, sable and buffalo, along with all the plains animals, providing an excellent all round wildlife experience in this remote corner of the Okavango. Access into this area is only by aircraft and then guests are transferred by means of vehicle and then mokoro or boat to the camp from the airstrip.

Mombo
Mombo Camp is situated on Mombo Island, adjoining the northern tip of Chief's Island, within the Moremi Game Reserve. The island is surrounded by open floodplains and the camp itself is largely built in and around the shade of some large Mangosteen, Ebony and Fig trees - overlooking a wonderful floodplain teeming with game. The camp has nine luxuriously furnished tents, raised off the ground. The guests' rooms and connecting walkways are up to two metres off the ground, allowing game to wander freely through the camp while at the same time allowing for guest safety. The canvas rooms are spacious and well appointed and have en-suite facilities with an additional outdoor shower for those who enjoy a shower under the stars. The camp offers abundant big game viewing, arguably the best in Botswana.

Kwara Camp
Kwara is located in the remote northern part of the Okavango Delta within the private Kwara concession bordering the Moremi Reserve. The camp fronts onto a huge floodplain, adjacent to the permanent water of the Delta and is backed by extensive bush. The eight luxury safari-style tents are built on raised decks, within a grove of huge and ancient African Ebony trees. Each tent has its own viewing deck, private en-suite facilities including hot and cold running showers, flush toilets and modern amenities. Guests can enjoy a diverse wildlife experience all year-round, but the focus is definitely on the water. The Kwara area is also home to a variety of wild animals including, lechwe, sitatunga, reedbuck, bushbuck, hippo, crocodiles, elephant, buffalo, sable, roan, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, impala and tsessebe. Lion, hyaena, wild dog, leopard and cheetah are abundant in this part of the Delta and regularly seen.

Duba Plains
Duba Plains is possibly the Okavango Delta's most remote camp. It is located in a private 30,000-hectare reserve and in the furthermost region of the Delta. The camp is situated on an island, surrounded by expansive seasonally flooded plains and shaded by tall ebony, fig and garcinia trees. This pristine area is home to Lion, Lechwe, Elephant, Aardwolf, Bat-eared fox, Side-striped jackal and huge herds of Buffalo, as well as a large variety of Okavango Delta bird life. Wattled Cranes and Slaty Egrets are some of the Okavango specials found in the area. The camp is small and intimate, with accommodation in six tented rooms. Each of the tents has an en-suite bathroom, with hot and cold running water, and a veranda overlooking the floodplain. The dining room and bar area is raised on decks with an extended deck for star gazing and there is a great pool with a view. The camp focuses on the incredible wildlife in the area through game drives, which are conducted during the day and at night in open 4 x 4 vehicles.
