Botswana

With over 40% of an area twice the size of Great Britain dedicated to wildlife reserves; Botswana remains one of Africa's last great wilderness areas with superb year round game viewing and unique habitats.

Chobe

Botswana's most iconic National Park is famed for its huge elephant population which in the dry winter months is the highest concentration of elephant on earth

When to go

  • Between May – Oct in the dry winter months, Chobe is famous for its massive herds of elephant and buffalo
  • Superb year round predator viewing
  • Jul – Sept one of the best time to see wild dog after they have denned and are less nomadic

What to do

  • Sundowner boat trip on the Chobe River to see herd after herd of elephant, and get up close to hippo, crocodile and a multitude of birds
  • Game drives amongst some of the largest herds of elephant and buffalo in Africa
  • Cultural village visits
  • Day trips to the Victoria Falls

Kalahari

This beautiful and expansive reserve of the Central Kalahari is one of the most remote and unspoiled parts of Africa, famous for its black mane lions.

When to go

  • All year round with different aspects. The dry winter months from Apr – Nov this is a true desert experience with species such as gemsbok eland and springbok adapted to arid conditions. Lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog are found in good number year round
  • After summer rains, thousands of grazers migrate here and the dry plains explode into a tapestry of colours. Migrant bird species also abound and this is an excellent time to come

What to do

  • Open vehicle game drives in search of the many species that have adapted to life in these arid conditions with good year round predators
  • Summer migration with thousands of grazers arriving and predator action and bird watching at their best
  • Walking with the San bushmen and learning about their ancient hunting and survival skills
  • Star watching is spectacular on the clear nights with any pollution hundreds of miles away

Mashatu

Mashatu Game Reserve is a diverse wilderness of savannah, riverine forests, marshland, open plains, baobabs and sandstone outcrops in the remote eastern corner of Botswana.

When to go

  • The Tuli enclave where Mahsatu is situated is a year round destination and has quite low rainfall even in the wetter summer months from Nov - Apr. Game viewing is consistently good, but the summer months do see an influx of migrant birds and the best chance to see the greasy Limpopo River actually flowing

What to do

  • Day and night game drives in open 4x4 vehicles
  • Specialist game drives with predator and elephant researchers
  • Walking safaris
  • Mountain bike safaris
  • Horse back safaris

Moremi

Described as one of the most attractive natural world reserves in Africa, Moremi combines mopane woodland and acacia forests, floodplains and a patchwork of lagoons and part of the Okavango.

When to go

  • Truly a year round destination but the wet summer months does mean some of the game viewing becomes restricted
  • Superb birding Nov – Apr with the arrival of the summer migrants
  • Jul – Sept wild dog den and become easier to find as not as nomadic

What to do

  • Day and night open vehicles game drives
  • Walking safaris and seasonal mokoro trails
  • Seasonal boat safaris and hide sleep outs
  • Some of the best big cat and wild dog viewing in Africa
  • Best place to see wild rhino in Botswana

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is rightly considered one of the most incredible wilderness sanctuaries in Africa. It is the largest inland delta system in the world, an area of 15 000km2 filled with water channels, lagoons and islands teeming with wildlife

When to go

  • The Okavango flood is in full flood and at its most spectacular from Apr – Sept
  • From Sept – Mar the flood recedes leaving great flood plains of fresh grazing attracting large herds of plains game
  • The summer months from Nov the area becomes a bird watchers paradise with migrants, heronries, flamingos and pelicans

What to do

  • Glide through papyrus walled channels in a mokoro
  • Boat out to islands where you can explore on foot
  • Day and night game drives and the chance to see some of Botswana's few wild rhino
  • Exceptional birding and the rare sitatunga and other aquatic species
  • Fishing on a catch and release basis

Linyanti Kwando

An extension to the Chobe NP these massive, unfenced private concessions are all over 1000sqkm of prime wilderness

When to go

  • Between May – Oct in the dry winter months, these areas are famous for massive herds of elephant and buffalo
  • Superb year round predator viewing
  • Jul – Sept one of the best time to see wild dog after they have denned and are less nomadic

What to do

  • Day and night game drives in massive private concessions
  • Boat and canoe safaris
  • Walking safaris, hides and exclusive mobile safaris
  • Horse riding safaris

Makgadikgadi

The Makgadikgadi abd Nxai Pans are an area of 12,000 sq kms of the Kalahari Basin, and some of the largest salt pans in the world.

When to go

  • The dry winter months from Apr – Nov are all about the Pans and the desert experience – quad biking, star filled skies, walking with San Bushmen, unique desert adapted species
  • Summer months, Nov – Mar - the area springs into life with fresh grazing attracting the largest migration in southern Africa
  • Nxai Pan has resident game and predators all year round, but in the wet summer months thousands of plains game arrive

What to do

  • Dry months – sleep out on the pans, tracking with San, interact with meerkats, quad bike on the Pans, and night drives to look for brown hyena, aardwolf and other elusive nocturnal species
  • Summer months – the pans are filled with water and a whole host of water birds arrive as well as flamingos
  • The largest migration in southern Africa passes through after and during the rains
